Frequently Asked Questions

What is TPLO Surgery?

TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) is a surgical procedure used to stabilize a dog’s knee after a torn cranial cruciate ligament (similar to an ACL injury in humans). It changes the angle of the tibia to eliminate instability, allowing your dog to move comfortably again.

Is TPLO better than other surgical options?

TPLO is often recommended for medium to large dogs or very active pets because it provides strong, long-term stability. However, the best option depends on your dog’s size, age, and activity level—your vet will guide you.

How long does recovery take?

Most dogs recover over eight (8) to twelve (12) weeks, but full healing and return to normal activity can take up to four (4) to six (6) months. Controlled activity and proper rehab are essential during this time.

Will my dog tear the other knee ligament?

Unfortunately, many dogs (up to 40 - 50%) may eventually injure the other knee. Maintaining a healthy weight and proper conditioning can help reduce the risk.
