Dr. Melissa Edwards received her DVM degree from Colorado State University in 1995 and then went into primary care practice prior to entering into a private practice emergency and critical care residency in 2000. Her residency training program took her to several specialty and emergency referral hospitals on the West Coast to complete her program. She became board-certified by ACVECC in 2007. She has continued working in private referral hospitals since that time including training interns and residents. She is currently working as a locum emergency and critical care specialist and consultant with a home base in Juneau Alaska. She enjoys teaching and has published articles and book chapters on hyperbaric oxygen therapy and catheter related infections. She has also worked as a veterinarian on the Iditarod Sled Dog Race in Alaska. Her special interests include pre-hospital care, trauma, surgery, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Dr. Edwards is active with the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care, Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society, VetCOT committees, National Association of Veterinary Emergency Medical Services (NAVEMS), and K9 Tactical Emergency Casualty Care working group as well as being involved in training operational K9 handlers on topics such as first aid.

In her free time she enjoys fly fishing, hiking, and contemplating life from her log cabin.
